In Texas hold'em, each player is dealt two cards face down. Then there is a round of betting. Next, three cards are laid out face up on the board. These cards represent what is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues before a fourth card is place face up which is known as the turn. Betting again takes place before the final card is turned face up and this card is called the river. If you as a player tend to call a lot of bets knowing your behind in the hand and then get lucky on the river by making a winning hand, your opponents probably consider you to be the dreaded poker varmint known as a river rat.
